Kurt Josef Waldheim served as the fourth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1972 to 1981, and the ninth President of Austria from 1986 to 1992.
In 1985, accusations emerged that Waldheim had served as an officer in a German army unit that had committed wartime atrocities. Declassified CIA documents later revealed that the CIA had been aware of his wartime past since 1945. In 1987, the U.S. Justice Dept. banned Waldheim from entering the United States.
David Horowitz credited Israeli UN Ambassador Benjamin Netanyahu for the exposure of Waldheim from documents found in the UN War Crimes archives located in the basement of the United Nations Headquarters.
